Total Depravity

The doctrine of total depravity asserts that mankind is spiritually dead in his sin and completely unable to respond to the call of the gospel. Regeneration (spiritual birth), therefore is required before a sinner can respond to the gospel in faith and repentance. Once regeneration has taken place in the heart of the sinner by means of the Word of God and the sovereign work of the Holy Spirit, the sinner finds the call to believe and repent irresistible. Otherwise, the sinner remains an enemy of God and completely unable to perform any good work, since all of his thoughts are continually evil.

Supporting Scriptures:

  • Romans 5:10 - For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.
  • Romans 8:7 - Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be.
  • Romans 3:10-18 - As it is written:
    “There is none righteous, no, not one;
    There is none who understands;
    There is none who seeks after God.
    They have all turned aside;
    They have together become unprofitable;
    There is none who does good, no, not one.”
    “Their throat is an open tomb;
    With their tongues they have practiced deceit”;

    “The poison of asps is under their lips”;
    “Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.”
    “Their feet are swift to shed blood;
    Destruction and misery are in their ways;
    And the way of peace they have not known.”
    “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”

  • John 6:65 - And He said, “Therefore I have said to you that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted to him by My Father.”
  • Genesis 6:5 - Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
  • Jeremiah 17:9 - The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it?
  • Jeremiah 13:23 - Can the Ethiopian change his skin or the leopard its spots? Then may you also do good who are accustomed to do evil.
  • Job 25:4-6 - How then can man be righteous before God?
    Or how can he be pure who is born of a woman?
    If even the moon does not shine,
    And the stars are not pure in His sight,
    How much less man, who is a maggot,
    And a son of man, who is a worm?”
