Degrees of Punishment

The scriptures explain that there are various degrees of punishment in hell.  The following passage explains that responsibility is based on knowledge (not ability).  Therefore, the greater the knowledge, the greater that responsibility, and the greater the punishment for neglecting such a responsibility.
  • Luke 12:42-48 - everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required
The following categories of sin are listed from least to greatest.

Personal Sin

    • Revelation 20:12-13 - and the dead were judged...according to their deeds.
    • Col. 3:5-6 - God's wrath is coming upon those who sin.
    • Rom. 2:5-6 - treasuring up...wrath
    • Question: What does it mean to treasure up wrath?  What does this imply about degrees of punishment?

    Causing Others To Sin

    • Matt. 18:6-7, Luke 17:1-2 - woe to anyone who causes someone to sin
    • Romans 1:32 - approving of others who sin
    • Question: Why is causing others to stumble so sinful?

    Rejecting the Gospel

    • Matt. 10:14-15; Mark 6:10-11; Luke 10:10-15 - woe to those who do not receive the disciples into their home or city
    • Matt. 11:20-24 - woe to those who did not repent after witnessing Jesus' works
    • Matt 12:38-42 - Nineveh will rise up in judgement against Jesus' generation for demanding a sign and not repenting
    • Heb. 10:29 - severer punishment for rejecting the gospel
    • Question: What were the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah guilty of doing?  What does Jesus say is more sinful than what Sodom and Gomorrah did?  Why?
    • Question: Children of believing parents hear the gospel, both at home and in church, more often than any other people in history.  Also, many adults hear the gospel preached in church every week without being regenerate.  Knowing this, what types of people will receive the greatest amount of God's wrath on the day of judgment?

    Teaching False Doctrine

    • 2 Peter 2:4-11 - false teachers who revile spiritual dignitaries
    • 2 Peter 2:17; Jude 12-13 - reserved the blackness of darkness forever
    • Question: How is false teaching (e.g. distorting the gospel) more destructive and wicked than rejecting the gospel?
